Dear parents,
As your child is now in Middle School, novel study and daily reading needs to become an active habit in their lives. I’d like to begin with a modern book which has captured the attention of middle school students around the world, to make their reading fun and relatable. I believe if they have a pleasant experience with reading good stories in class, the higher the chances they will become avid independent readers. We would like to begin a novel study with the following book: “Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pies” By Jordan Sonnenblick
Summary:
A brave and beautiful story that will make readers laugh and break their hearts at the same time. Thirteen-year-old Steven has a totally normal life: he plays drums in the All-Star Jazz band and is constantly annoyed by his five-year-old brother, Jeffrey. But when Jeffrey is diagnosed with leukemia, Steven's world is turned upside down. He is forced to deal with his brother's illness and his parents' attempts to keep the family in one piece. Salted with humor and peppered with devastating realities, the book is a heartwarming journey through a year in the life of a family in crisis. A must read for modern Middle School Literature.
Please let me know if you have questions or concerns, thank you to all the parents in advance, your support this year means so much to us,
-Ms. Lopez
