Novel Study

Dear parents,

As your child is now in Middle School, novel study and daily reading needs to become an active habit in their lives. I’d like to begin with a modern book which has captured the attention of middle school students around the world, to make their reading fun and relatable. I believe if they have a pleasant experience with reading good stories in class, the higher the chances they will become avid independent readers.  We would like to begin a novel study with the following book:  “Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pies” By Jordan Sonnenblick

Summary:

A brave and beautiful story that will make readers laugh and break their hearts at the same time. Thirteen-year-old Steven has a totally normal life: he plays drums in the All-Star Jazz band and is constantly annoyed by his five-year-old brother, Jeffrey. But when Jeffrey is diagnosed with leukemia, Steven's world is turned upside down. He is forced to deal with his brother's illness and his parents' attempts to keep the family in one piece. Salted with humor and peppered with devastating realities, the book is a heartwarming journey through a year in the life of a family in crisis. A must read for modern Middle School Literature.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns, thank you to all the parents in advance, your support this year means so much to us,

-Ms. Lopez

Welcome Back to School!

Dear Students and Parents,

I am delighted to welcome you all to the 2016-17 Dominican International School year.
My name is Phyllis Lopez and I am beyond excited to begin a new year at DISK as your child’s English Language Art’s teacher. I am from the United States (Miami, Florida). I have an Associates Degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistic Education. I have been teaching at private international schools for the past 5 years, most recently in Nicaragua (Central America). My husband and I moved to Taiwan 2 years ago, he is currently starting his PhD program in NPUST University. We plan to stay here for a few more years while he completes his program.

While this is my first year as a middle school teacher, I am very eager to begin this adventure with your children. My first passion has always been reading and writing so I hope to motivate and inspire your child to feel the same way. Our curriculum for this year has expanded to include complex reading and focus on comprehension and vocabulary enrichment. In addition, grammar and semantics practice will be crucial in developing writing skills that will incorporate creative, expository and poetic writing.

I also believe in open lines of communication between parents and teachers, so please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns throughout the year. My email is lopezphy@gmail.com. I will also be updating our class blog every week, where I will include information pertaining to projects, homework, activities, and important announcements.
The following is a list of materials your child will need for my classes (Reading and Vocabulary, as well as English Language Arts)
2 composition notebooks as journals
2 Spiral A4 notebooks
2 packets of loose leaf paper (Preferably with margins)
Pencil and erasers

Students must pay class funds for consumable items throughout the year such as class supplies, extra books, and student publications. These funds also go toward activities and events in class that the students will be involved in planning and preparing. Each student is to pay $4,000 NTD. If your child will be having lunch at school, please send the envelope with Lunch Money sealed and your child name on the front.

Here are some important reminders for this year:
Students are to be in the classroom by 8:25am. They need time to prepare for the first class and turn in homework.
Parents and students are required to read the student handbook and sign the last page. Please return that page to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school. Important information, such as uniform rules and overall expectations can be found in it.

On August 20th, parents are invited to meet the faculty and become familiar with the school grounds, policies, expectations and plans for the year. It’s also a great way for us to develop a relationship that is so vital for your child’s development.

With warm regards,

Ms. Lopez
